Throughout the month of December, a Sears Home & Business Franchises, Inc. franchisee will donate a portion of the sales of each new garage door to the Northfield Township Food Pantry.

Feeding the hungry is an issue close to the heart of Chicagoland franchise owner Barry Brownstone.

Prior to operating a franchise, Brownstone worked in the restaurant industry for more than 20 years. Throughout that time, he regularly donated food from his restaurant to the Greater Chicago Food Depository and a local church soup kitchen.

In 2008, Brownstone was one of many out of work during the Great Recession. "I saw a Sears Home & Business Franchise, Inc. opportunity for servicing and installing garage doors and openers," Brownstone said. "I knew I was a quick learner, hardworking, and respectful of the importance of good customer service, so I bought the franchise and never looked back."

Nine years later, Brownstone now has a solid team of garage service professionals and a renewed passion to help those in need. As a result, Brownstone will donate a portion of December sales to the Northfield Township Food Pantry. In addition, customers purchasing any two-car garage door will receive a $100 discount on the door price.

"We do our best to find ways to connect with the community, and we are members of several Chambers of Commerce and service organizations," Brownstone said. "We work hard to please our customers, and we appreciate their trust in us. This is one way to thank the community and help our neighbors at the same time."

Jill Brickman, supervisor at Northfield Township Food Pantry, says more than 580 families are eligible to receive donations from the pantry, which is completely reliant upon donations for all the food it distributes.

"We literally would not be able to do it without this kind of support," Brickman said of the Sears Home & Business Franchises, Inc. commitment. "Giving is contagious. This builds interest in helping people understand the need and how they can help. Hunger can happen anywhere, and Sears' act of kindness helps spread the word."
